Urgent appointments for today or tomorrow
We understand that not all illnesses are planned and offer same-day urgent appointments when the GP feels these are indicated. Please use our GP online system to complete an online appointment which will be assessed by a GP.
Please keep your phone near you so we can contact you at short notice.
If the doctor needs to see you in person or you would prefer a face-to-face appointment, we will invite you to come in.
How to request
- Request an urgent appointment online
- If you are unable to use the online form, then please telephone us on 01582 712021 and a receptionist will complete this form for you.
Extended Access
We also have extended access available. See our Out of Hours information.
Book a Routine Appointment
All appointment requests and queries are reviewed on the same day by a GP. The GP will advise whether you need an appointment and if so which type. The GP may advise another course of action if more appropriate.
Please check your SMS text, email, or you may be contacted by phone.
Ways to book

Sickness Certificates (Fit Notes)
You must give your employer a doctor's 'fit note' (sometimes called a 'sick note') if you've been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non-working days, such as weekends and bank holidays.

Home Visits
Please be aware that our GPs will often either call to assess the home visit request first or ask a receptionist to contact you.
If you need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 11:30am.
How to request
- Request a home visit online
- If you are unable to use a computer, then please telephone us on 01582 712021 and a receptionist will complete this form for you.
We visit housebound patients who need a face-to-face assessment. However, as with all appointments, we may suggest a telephone or video appointment in the first instance.
Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible.
You may request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. A clinician will visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it. They will assess how urgently a visit is needed so please be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to assess and schedule the visit.
Change or cancel an appointment
Please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.
To cancel your appointment:
- Use your NHS account (through the NHS website or NHS App)
- Reply CANCEL to your appointment reminder text message
- Cancel using the GP online system
- Phone us on 01582 712021
Late for your appointment
Please try to be on time for your appointment. The Clinician may not be able to see you if you are late, in which case we will ask you to make another appointment.
All clinicians endeavour to run to time, but the nature of our work means that this is not always possible. We appreciate your understanding and patience in these circumstances.
Out of hours
Enhanced Access
We work with the other two Harpenden GP practices to provide you with access to medical services for routine problems outside of our normal working hours. These appointments are known as Network Standard Hours and are offered between:
- 7am and 8am and between 6:30pm to 8pm on weekdays (Monday to Friday)
- 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.
These appointments could be at any of the three Harpenden practices with a doctor, nurse or health professional from any of the practices or the Harpenden Health Primary Care Network.
Life Threatening
Call 999 or go to A&E now if:
- you or someone you know needs immediate help
- you have seriously harmed yourself – for example, by taking a drug overdose
A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency.
Urgent But Not Life Threatening
Visit an urgent care centre if:
- You have an urgent medical issue requiring on the day attention
Non-urgent
Use NHS 111 if:
- You need help now, but it’s not an emergency
There will be someone to provide you with advice and to direct you to a clinician if it is necessary.
Further appointment information
GP Assessment System
To manage rising patient demand and ensure timely access to medical advice, our surgery uses a Clinical Triage System that assesses patients based on clinical need. This allows patients to see the right clinician quickly, improving care and outcomes. As part of a Primary Care Network, we can directly book appointments with specialist clinicians when appropriate.
Text reminder service
We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your face to face appointments.
Please remember to update your contact details with us when you change address, telephone number, and email address. You will be asked to provide ID.
Interpreter
If you require a telephone-based interpreter, please notify the receptionist, and they will arrange this for you. If you require an interpreter to attend in person, please inform the receptionist when booking- we may need up to two weeks to organise this service.
Chaperones
If you would like a chaperone present during your appointment, please either inform the receptionist when booking your appointment or when checking in or speak to the clinician at the start of your appointment.
